DOJ Settlement - The 2017 Texas Church Shooting

Description: The Department of Justice says it has tentatively settled a lawsuit over the 2017 mass shooting at a Texas Church. This settlement with families and victims totals $144 million. Due to the gunman being a member of the U.S. air force, the previous U.S. District judge ruled that the Air Force was 60% liable. This was because the Air Force failed to report his assault convictions during his service.

Impact:

  • While the settlement can never replace the precious lives lost in the Texas shooting, this case shows the national attention and the financial impact of church shootings.

  • This also provides a strong case for the importance of church security.
